What do you say when your kids ask about why those two men were kissing each other? When your kids want to know why God allows hurricanes and earthquakes to happen? When they ask why Grandma and Grandpa got divorced? How can you explain these difficult subjects in an age-appropriate way that preserves your child’s innocence and offers him hope while still honestly explaining the realities of life?
Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions: Helping Them Understand Loss, Sin, Tragedies, and Other Hard Topics was written specifically to help parents answer their kids’ tough questions from a Biblical perspective. Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson share invaluable insight and compassion as they discuss difficult questions that kids will struggle with and parents would rather avoid.
Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions is full of super practical talking points to help guide parents as they navigate through many of the challenging conversations that will surface as they raise children. These topics include discussions about:
- Sin
- Death
- Satan
- Hell
- Divorce Adultery
- Difficult Bible stories
- Homosexuality
- Pornography
- Natural disasters
- Violence
- War, and
- Terrorism.
As always, Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson portray these difficult conversations in the light of the gospel, offering hope and grace-filled answers to difficult topics.
Each chapter in this book begins with a description of a difficult topic and explains what the Bible says about that subject, helping parents to have a solid Biblical world view of the topic themselves. The chapter then moves into a discussion of some talking points that you can use with your own children, broken down into appropriate age groups – preschool, 5 to 10 year olds, and 11 year olds or older. I appreciate that the talking points take into consideration the developmental stages that children may be at, as children may understand things like death very differently from adults.
Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson are two of my favorite authors. I love their parenting book, Give Them Grace, and Jessica’s devotional for children, Exploring Grace Together. Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions is an excellent addition for every family library.
