Would you like to encourage your tween or teen daughter to develop a habit of daily Bible reading while also building a stronger relationship with her? Here’s a simple way to do just that!

Anytime that we desire to build a good habit, it is helpful to know that someone else is sharing this journey with us. Our children are no different!

I firmly believe that the best way to encourage our kids to read the Bible for themselves is to let them see us reading it and to read it with them.

The Mother/Daughter Bible Reading Journal is a perfect way to hold your daughter accountable, while also encouraging her to hold you accountable in your Bible reading.

All you need to get started is a notebook and a Bible.

The Mother/Daughter Bible Reading Journal consists of three main sections:

  • Bible Reading Challenge
  • Prayer
  • Connection

How does the Mother/Daughter Bible Reading Journal Work?

I write in my girls’ journal each morning and leave it on their desks to find. They can read and fill out the journal at any time during the day, then place it on my desk so that I can look over it, pray for them, and answer their questions. Then, we start all over again the next morning.

It is important to keep the journal simple and fun. You might also consider using the journal to surprise your daughter with her favorite candy, a gift card or bookmark, or to announce a fun activity that you have planned.

Below is a picture of a journal that I was able to purchase which includes coloring pages. My girls love to color, so they are really excited about this particular journal.

1. Bible Reading Challenge

Find a Bible reading plan that will fit your daughter’s needs and your own. Not sure where to start?

  • Try a Bible reading plan from Rachel Wojo.
  • Find a plan in your study Bible
  • Read consecutively through one book of the Bible, one “section” at a time.

Make sure that whatever Bible plan you choose, it is something that is realistically doable for both you and your daughter. If you are both new to the Bible, the book of Luke is a great place to start!

At the top of your journal page, write the date and the Bible passage to be read for that day. Place a check mark next to the passage when you have finished reading it, and encourage your daughter to place a check mark next to the passage when she has finished reading it.

Underneath of the Bible passage, you may want to write one question from the text for your daughter to answer. For younger girls, this may be a reading comprehension question (“What did he do when…?”) For older girls, this may be a “digging deeper” question (“How do you think she felt when…?”) or a life application question (“What do you think we can learn from this passage about …?”)

Include space for your daughter to write a question for you.

2. Prayer

In this section, share a prayer request that God has laid on your heart, and ask your daughter to pray for this as well. (“Would you be willing to pray for…?”)

You can also share with your daughter something that you are thankful for. (“Today I am so thankful to God for….”)

Then, ask your daughter if she has any prayer requests. (“How can I pray for you today?”)

You may also ask her what she is thankful for. (“What are you thankful for today?”)

If you know that she is going through something difficult, let her know how you are already praying for her. (“I am praying for you today as you….”)

3. Connection:

In this section, ask one question to help you get to know your daughter better. You can also give her space to ask you a question. Here are some questions ideas to get you started:

  • What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
  • If you could have an unusual pet, what would you get?
  • What makes you really frustrated?
  • What is your favorite book/movie/song?
  • If you could play any instrument, what would you play?
  • If you could be any character in (favorite book or movie), who would you be?
  • Would you rather be a… or a ….? (fill in blanks with something serious or silly – famous musician or a stunt pilot, teacher or a doctor)
  • If you could go anywhere on vacation for a week, where would you go?
  • What teacher are you most afraid of getting next year?
  • What teacher would you love to get next year?
  • What makes you sad?
  • What is your greatest fear?
  • What is the worst food you have ever eaten?
  • What is your favorite store?
  • If we were able to spend a few hours together, what would you want to go and do?
  • Would you rather eat a …. or a …..
  • If you wrote a book, what kind of book would you write?
  • What is your favorite (spring, summer, fall, winter) activity?
  • If you could play one sport really, really well, what would you play?
  • What was your favorite family vacation?
  • If you could erase one school subject from your schedule, what would it be?
  • If you could be an eyewitness to one of Jesus’ miracles, which one would you choose?
  • What is your favorite Bible hero (heroine)? Why?
  • If you could visit one foreign country, where would you go?
  • If you could meet one famous person alive today, who would you want to meet?
  • If you could meet one famous person from history, who would you want to meet?
  • What do you think are the most important qualities in a friend/boyfriend/husband?
  • If you could change one thing about your personality/appearance, what would it be?
  • If you could change one thing about my personality, what would it be?
  • If you could improve one thing in our family, what would it be?

As you work on the Mother/Daughter Bible reading journal, remember that you don’t need to include every element in every entry. The prayer section and the connection section can be modified to best fit your needs for that day.

  1. Thank-you so much for this! God brought along a group of girls into my life a few years ago, all from unchurched homes. We went through the Lamb book and they all got saved PTL!! We have been studying the Bible once a week, but, I have been searching for something to help challenge them to read on their own. Growth is so slow when it’s just once a week!! This is such a great help, thank-you so much!!

  2. Hi Anna,

Thank you for this recommendation. God be praised! A great way to connect with my daughter during the summer.

  3. Hi, Anna!

I came across your website while looking for organizing a book club that my daughter and I are planning to do together and I would love to include this Mother/Daughter Reading Journal with our project. She loves to read but I want to be honest, we have not read Bible together and she have not picked up Bible to read. I love this idea. Thank you for sharing! Just one question, do you have a favorite Bible that you use with your kids?

    1. Meg, my girls have been enjoying the Explorer’s Study Bible. There is both a “boy’s” version and a “girl’s” version, with lots of helpful inserts, charts, lists of verses, etc. My son has also enjoyed the Adventure Bible – I don’t know if there is a girls version of that. I included the links, which are my affiliate links, just so that you can easily find them. I believe they are available in several different translations. I hope that helps! May God bless you.

  4. I absolutely love this idea! My oldest daughter is 8 so I don’t think we are quite ready for this yet, but I’m storing this idea away to use down the road. Great post. Thank you!
