Is Bible Reading Just a Check on Your To-Do List?

By Anna Joy

I have a confession to make. I have been struggling a lot lately with my personal devotional time.

It’s not that I haven’t been reading the Bible. I have been faithfully reading it every morning. But that doesn’t mean that I have been getting much out of it.

Far too often I can allow my eyes to fly over the words of the Bible without absorbing what God is telling me in His Word. I finish my “quiet time” with prayer, but I don’t know what to pray for, or how to pray. So, I close my eyes and promptly fall asleep. Unless I am intentionally interacting with the Bible and praying for God’s Word to enter into my heart, it is easy for Bible reading to become an “academic” pursuit much like reading through a boring textbook. Bible reading and “prayer” becomes nothing more than a box on my “to do” list that I check off each morning.

Obviously, my “quiet time” is doing little for my spiritual growth. And isn’t that when Satan loves to attack us? He comes and whispers in my ear, “You can’t even pray. See? You fall asleep. You don’t love God. The Bible doesn’t mean anything to you. Nothing will ever change. You will never be useful to God. Why keep trying? Give it up.”

But if I am truly a follower of Christ, I cannot give up on prayer and reading God’s Word. Even though I fall flat on my face over and over again, by God’s grace I have to get up, dust myself off, and try again.

Perhaps one of my problems is that I separate Bible reading from prayer. What if my inability to pray is directly related to my lack of engaging with God’s Word? If God was actively speaking to me through His Word, wouldn’t I desire to communicate with Him through prayer?

But on the flip side, doesn’t prayer open up my heart to see God’s direction for me in the Bible? What if I could cement a Bible passage into my life through prayer?

I want God’s Word to teach my heart to pray, and I want prayer to open my eyes to truly understand what God has for me in His Word.  In order to make that a practical reality, I have developed some prayer journal sheets for my own personal use.

How about you? Do you need to make a commitment (or renew a commitment) to be faithful in reading God’s Word on a daily basis? Or, has your daily Bible time become a chore to check off your to-do list? If you are struggling in this area, I pray that you will be able to find some encouragement or ideas from these journal sheets for your own personal use.

The Prayer Sheets are based on five elements of prayer:

1. Worship
2. Submission or Obedience to His Calling
3. Repentance or Confession of Sins
4. Thanksgiving
5. Petition

I am convinced that God has not only called us to pray, but has also given us all of the resources that we need to pray well in His Word and through His Spirit.

Yes, I often fail in this area. But, praise God, I can get up and try again, praying for His strength and enabling. After all, isn’t a personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe and the Savior of my soul worth a little bit of effort on my part?

  1. This is extremely helpful thank you so much. If anyone else is struggling with setting your priorities straight with reading God’s word each day then this is the perfect way to start getting there and to carry on. It can really improve your relationship with the Lord. <3 Much love, God bless you!!!!!!

  2. This prayer journal page is exactly what I have been searching (and searching and searching)for! This sheet helps me focus on the passage at hand. As I read the daily passage I will also be praying God the Holy Spirit will bring to mind the points He wants to direct my attention to. No more will I read the passage and promptly forget what I read. I plan to use these as I read through the Bible in 2021. I’m also going to share some with my sister in Florida who will be reading along side me…virtually! Thank you for allowing God to direct you in the creation of this and the many other resources you offer. Btw, I have a granddaughter named Lydia Joy and she is just that!

  3. Thanks I’ve been looking at journal pages on Pinterest I hope this will jumpstart me in the right direction. I too have a problem falling asleep when I sit down to do my bible study- I know it’s the enemy but it’s very hard sometimes to stay awake!! I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one!! Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi , first of all , thanks for sharing a such important topic . I thought that I was the only one dealing with this issue. A want to confess that I am been envolve lately in trying to pray and to fall a sleep . Unfortunately , this is an act of warfare by the enemy , that we need to be focused on . But I would like to thank to our lord and savior Jesus Christ for inspire you to complement a devotional nurtured with more
Taste for a better meaningful relationship with him. Best regards

  5. I really like this sheet! Thank you! It gave me a different way of applying and actually using what I learn! It will actually make reading more fun since I love to write! I’m always trying to find things like this for my quiet time!

  6. Thank you for all your inspiration. I have been wanting to start a Bible journal for a long time. This is just what I need to get from reading, to learning, to”praying from the Heart”. Many times we read and our mind is elsewhere. Before I know it I have to go back and re-read the last five sentences. Praying from the Heart for others or problems is best way to Love thy Neighbor, yourself, your family, and God. Thanks again.

  7. Thank you. I’m hoping to get myself on track with listening better to the sermons and daily bible devotions. I was speaking about it to my pastor last night and she told me about the different things on Pinterest. I didn’t even know there were such things to help.

    Have a great day,
    Carey

  8. I liked how you connected our prayer life to our reading. Sometimes I have trouble praying. I never connected it to the times when I have been digging into the Word. That is a helpful insight. Thanks.

  9. I don’t keep a journal….and I do. What I mean is I am not really the journaling type. I appreciate those that can write down thoughts and express them. It just has zero appeal to me. HOWEVER, in those days when I am just overwhelmed with a certain problem, need or want I buy a journal and put that problem as a label on the outside. For example, when it took us 8 years to get pregnant I kept a journal of prayers, verses, thoughts, etc. That was my “Pregnancy” journal. When I got pregnant it turned into my space to write about all the happy happenings. When my husband died I had a “Grief and Memories.” Now as I am facing a “re-entry” to my home culture after living 10 years abroad and raising kids ONLY as an expat I am terrified of the re-entry journey. So I have a “Re-entry” journal. When I was much younger I had a journal where I wrote down a few bullet points of the good things that had happened to me that day. “Blessings.”

    1. I like rereading those journals now occasionally to see the different verses that helped me thru different stages or problems of life.

  10. Thank you for your helpful thoughts on quiet time.
I am looking forward to using your prayer journal page to direct my bible reading time.
    Thank you so much!

  11. Thanks. Refreshing. So needed to hear another mom say what I go through many days. It’s a beautiful exchange between His Word and prayer and us. Isn’t it amazing to be able to have His Word and that we are allowed to pray directly to Him!!!!! That alone should bring us into His presence with awe and thanksgiving…… Blessings sister.

    1. Yes, Laura! I love your perspective – we should be amazed that God desires a relationship with us and that He has made it possible. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. May God bless you!
